The idea is to provide a space for social interaction.
Every Thursday Emmaus Åland serves soup and bread. Everyone is welcome!
We do this so that people will get a chance to eat without costing as well because it's nice to meet around a bowl of soup.
Those who want to make a contribution, make a small donation to Emmaus refugee projects.
The food is prepared from waste food that we receive from a food store.
In 2016 we had a total of 1014 guests around the table.
The soup is prepared by a group of long term unemployed persons who are at job training at Emmaus Åland.
We cooperate with a food store which donates their food waste to us.
Already many years ago we noted the need of new social meeting places. And we also noted that more and more people couldn’t afford to buy their own food.
We answered to these needs by starting the Emmaus soup kitchen.
We will involve the soup kitchen guests more in the other Emmaus activities (volunteer work, job training, social events etc.).
We started the soup kitchen in the autumn of 2015. The number of guests has been growing all the time and the mixture of people has also been broader and broader.
The initiative has been covered by local media.
The initiative is already sustainable.
