We have a place in the Oasis neighbourhood where we carry out sales. It was in a companions meeting on 15 June 2012 that, after seeing how precarious the children’s education was, we decided to help them by providing academic assistance, also making the most of the fact that we have the support of a teacher, Jeanete Ramirez Palacios.
We looked at the local children’s situation, and decided to provide them with academic support from Monday to Friday in the afternoons (3-5 pm).
We have managed to get an average of 50 children coming to our centre in the afternoons to receive academic support after their school day finishes.
At first, as well as educational support, we gave them a snack of a cold drink and a biscuit. Later, after hearing from our own companions, we realised that some of the children were not eating well, perhaps not even having breakfast before school, so we decided to give them a meal.
We switched the biscuits and a cold drink for chicken soup, stew or noodles and one hot drink per hour.
There are almost 10 companions who are part of the group, as well as the teacher Jeanete Ramirez. We could also mention the families who have supported us by dropping their children off on time to give them the support we offer.
Our main collaborator is the teacher Jeanete, who gives up some of her time to help us with a couple of hours’ academic support for children that come to our centre.
The children at school.
Currently, the School is suspended due to construction work being carried out at our centre in José Gálvez, where we will move our activities to. We aim to help the people in this area by providing the same support that we started providing years ago.
We have managed to support more than 50 schoolchildren.
Over the course of the year we also celebrate their birthdays (we do one shared celebration each month).
Our main goal is to help the most needy, whether with academic support or through providing food, and even medicine, but the idea is to help people in our area who are suffering because they do not have necessary means to get a good education and/or feed themselves properly.
We are working to pay for the education and feeding of the children that come to our school with our own resources. That is why we are continuing with the work in Gálvez, to support this.
We hope to continue with what we are doing to help as many children as we can, providing them with support that they might not be able to receive in their own schools.
